Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was positioned in hills just above the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a series of access tunnels providing entry to the facility... initial indications suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - referred to as ISIS - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This action demonstrates British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eliminate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State after its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank all the members of the UK armed forces involved in this strike for their professionalism and their courage," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were part of a great many British personnel stationed over the festive period. This operation, to take out militants who endanger our safety, shows how our armed forces are prepared to act, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and influential overseas."

In December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "massive strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, following an attack killed two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. says Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
